As I write this article, the anniversary of September 11 brings us together to reflect on the tragic events and loss of life one year ago. The loss of Brother Costello was still fresh in our minds and hearts as thousands of Building and Construction Trades gathered at Ground Zero in a ceremony honoring those who lost their lives one year ago. The ceremony ended with a two and a half hour reading of the victims names. God bless those who lost their lives that day. Pictured below are some of the members attending the ceremony on September 11, 2002.

At the September meeting, nominations were held for the position of Vice President/Business Manager. Brothers Fred McCourt Jr. and Tom Moore were nominated for the position. By the time you read this, the election will have taken place. I will report the results in next month's article. We now hold our elections at the Apprenticeship Training Facility in Long Island City, which is run by Brother Ed Krull. When Brother Jim Higgins took the position of NEIEP National Director, he left some big shoes to fill. Brother Krull has done an excellent job as Director of the apprenticeship program and the training facilities. On behalf of the membership, thank you for your dedication.

Politics: Elections for public office are over. If you were involved in the 2002 election process, thank you. If you were not involved, it's not too late, 2004 will be here before you know it. If we do not exercise our right and our obligation to vote, we have no right to complain about the condition of our city, state or country. A good example of labor working in politics is legislation that was just signed, which requires contractors with a construction contract with Nassau County to participate in an apprenticeship program approved by the State Commissioner of Labor.

Safety: Some time ago, I remember reading one of the correspondents to the Journal praising the safety harness for saving him from injury or possibly death. Well, it's my turn to do the same. While standing outside the hoist way, moving lumber, I was caught by a 4x6 and was thrown into the hoist way. Thanks to the safety harness the only thing that was slightly bruised was my ego. As many of you out there, I belonged to the " that would not happen to me " club. I was quickly reminded an accident can happen to anyone. There are two interesting facts about falls. The first is, the most common height resulting in death is 12 feet. The second is, the majority of people who were killed in a fall had their safety harness on, they just did not take the few seconds to hook up. Although I would have been happy never knowing how well the harness worked, my family and I are grateful to those who fought to have such safety equipment used in our industry.

Retirees Corner: We have a new addition to our retirees, Brother Al Onley. We wish you all the best Brother. Although you are retired now, I know we will see you at the meetings. Pictured below is Al receiving his retirement watch from Brother Green.

Local One extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the following departed Brothers: David Johnson (active), James Macias (active), Robert Payne (active) Angelo Bozzone (retired), Charles Hale (retired), Richard Muniz (retired), John Nilsen (retired), Henry Reid (retired)

Quote of the month: Time is like money; the less we have of it to spare, the further we make it go. - H. W. Shaw.

Fraternally,

Mike Duffy
