August Article 2003

Greetings from proud brothers and sisters of Local One,

You would have to double-check your calendar to remind yourself this was June and not April. Rain has gently fallen upon us at times, but the lion’s share has beaten us to a muddy pulp. Yes, the sun had come out long enough to remind us it was June and to provide us with a hot muggy meeting before the summer break. The membership was abuzz, something was in the air, perhaps it was spring fever; perhaps it was something else, you could smell it! This meeting the vote to repeal the constitutional amendment, fining a member who misses a mandatory vote, was held. In the discussion preceding the vote most members voiced support for the amendment as it stands. When the votes were tallied, the motion to repeal the amendment was voted down. Members will still have to come to mandatory elections or provide a legitimate excuse for their absence. During the course of the meeting Bill Bennett was called on stage to receive his 25-year pin and also to wish him a happy 50th birthday. Bill is truly one of the class individuals in this local. If you don’t know Bill, make it a point to get to know him before your career is over. You will be a better person for it.

The Armor Bowling League Awards Dinner was held Friday, May 23th, at the Knights of Columbus, Mineola. Eddie (Apples) McAllister hosted the gala event with John Thoericht awarding the trophies. The DJ provided music to fill the dance floor, and enough food and drink was had to make all merry. Thanks for the great time! Pictured below are Eddie and Mary Davidson, Eddie Apples McAllister, John Thoericht, Danny Boom Boom Reardon, Jimmy Connolly, Debbie Carr Vasak (missing John John the medicine man Roth). Any brothers or sisters interested in having some fun and laughs bowling contact Eddie Apples at 631-543-3179. Eddie also provides instruction. He raised my average from 91 to105 in five short years. The season begins the 1st Wednesday after Labor Day at 5:45 p.m. and runs through May, at the 34th Avenue Bowl in Queens.

Congratulations to Brother Mike Walsh Sr. and to his son Mike Jr., who won the Bill Denny Award and The Greater Middlesex County Sportsmanship Award for excelling in both sports and academics, while exhibiting leadership and dedication. Mike Jr. hit .345 and had a .520 on-base percentage, playing third base for the Old Bridge High School baseball team. His grades were also top notch carrying a 3.7 grade point average. Mike Walsh Jr. is enrolled in Salisbury University, which he will attend in September.

On May 30th, a party was given in honor of Rudy Petzold to celebrate his retirement. The affair was held at Eleanor Rigby's in Mineola. Rudy had many people on hand to wish him well and toast his future. It was nice to see so many young people at a retirement party along with the veterans. Pictured below is Brother Green with Rudy. Good Luck Rudy, enjoy that pension.

June 14th, Joe Nolan hosted the Local One Fishing Trip aboard the Captain Jim II, out of Freeport, Long Island. That Saturday was one of the only sunny days on a weekend we've had this spring. Tommy Bennett served up the Bloody Marys hot and spicy. The fish were biting and most buckets were filled with seabass and porgies. The mates aboard the boat were great and the seas were gentle. I don't believe I saw one sign of chum all day. Pictured below are Tommy Bennett, Joe Nolan and Mike Melito

A note dropped by Mike Locke on behalf of Pete, Maria and baby Sofia Assalone. He wanted to thank all the brothers and sisters for their help and prayers. Especially those that work at the AOL jobsite, including the ThyssenKrupp employees. Sofia was born 22 weeks premature, weighing 1lb. 2oz. She now weighs 7 lb. and is getting ready to go home with God's help. Pictured below is baby Sofia. You are in our prayers.
