August Article 2004

Valued Members of the Local One Union,
I'd like to start off this month's newsletter by introducing myself, Lee Pirone, as your new Correspondent. I'd like to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to represent and serve some of the hardest working men and women this fine city has to offer. I assure you that I will try my best to keep you all up to date on everything going on in our union.

Now that the June 17th election is over, I would like to congratulate our newly elected officers, and hopefully, I won't have to do so again for another 3 years.

Union Officers:
President/Business Manager……….. Raymond Hernandez
Vice President/Business Agents…….. Lenny Legotte, Fred McCourt Edward Krull, Bob Stork
Day Secretary……………………… Gary Riefenhauser
Secretary Treasurer………………….. Anthony Carudo
Recording Secretary…………………..Richie Loeb
Board of Trustees……………………..Steven Mazza, Kevin McClaughry, Eddie O’Hare, Mike Halpin, Charlie Novac Jr.

While we are congratulating those that won their elections, we should also thank all those brothers who ran for positions and didn't win. Your hard work and eagerness to participate are helping to make this union great, and none of it will go unnoticed.

Brother Ray Hernandez also wanted to let every sister of the Local One I.U.E.C. know that he is very proud of your contributions to the union, and we all hope that you will continue to be active in union affairs. As we move deeper into the 21st century, it's important that all of us, brothers and sisters band together to make this great union's future, even brighter.

What’s Happening/ Happened??
On the political front, it is important that everyone and their families are registered to vote. Here is just one issue that I read about in the New York Times on President Bush's policies: The Bush administration is currently proposing regulations on overtime pay. Secretary of Labor, Elaine L. Chao drafted regulations stating that any worker making over 65,000 dollars a year base pay will not be eligible for overtime pay. If you think that this will not affect you because of your collective bargaining agreement, think again. This will have a negative impact when you go to the table to negotiate a new contract. In past weeks, President Bush has revised this regulation due to the election year, as it now stipulates that anybody making over 100,000 will not be eligible for overtime. This will take affect within 120 days of the regulation's passing.

News Bits
1 Brother Eddie Olson, a volunteer fireman and trained EMT,  immediately ran to the aid  of a victim who had fallen from a nearby rooftop at this past election. He stabilized the victim until rescue units arrived. Brother Olson, your heroics are admired and appreciated by us all.

2 Brother Tom Murphy is running for trustee of Mamaroneck, Westchester County this November. It is vital that the union voters support candidates who are labor friendly. If you can help please email him at MURPHY365@aol.com. If you can help financially please send a check made out to Village Campaign 2004, mail it to PO Box 614, Mamaroneck, NY 10543.

3 The Bagpipe Band performed in Whitestone, Queens' Memorial Day parade with Mayor Bloomberg. They did a fabulous job.

4 Brother Fred Connick won over 1,000 dollars in the 50/50, but donated all his winnings back to The Bagpipe Band. Thank you Brother Connick for your generosity.

Retirees Corner
Retired Brother Ed Brock wanted to let his two daughters, Kathleen & Meghan, know that he is very proud of them for making the deans list at their respective Universities.  Congratulations to Brother Pete McArdle on his recent retirement. The members from Arrow Elevator sent him off with a trip to Las Vegas & golf clubs.
