Valued Member of The Local One,
As the end of the summer nears, I'd like to start off by commending Joe Nolan, and all of the Local one brothers and sisters who donated their time, on throwing another successful local one Picnic. We were lucky enough to have the weather hold out for us, a great time was had by everyone, especially our kids, who got to enjoy all of the wonderful activities that were planned for them. I was hoping my number would get called for the Harley Davidson raffle, but it wasn't my lucky day. Congratulations to all those lucky brothers and sisters who did win though, enjoy your prizes.
Work wise, I was fortunate enough this past month to be given a tour of 7 World Trade Center. Brother Kevin McDermott gave me a tour of the building and some of it's pressing safety issues. I couldn't help but feel overpowered by the importance of this job site, being that it's the first building to go up on the World Trade Center grounds. I can't even imagine the pride felt by the brothers and sisters who have been given the honor of working on the rebuilding of a site that helped, and will someday help again, to make this city so magnificent. As they work, I'm sure they hope that people like Fallen Brother Chuck Costello are with them, watching over as they rebuild greatness.
Politics
The presidential vote is right around the corner, and we encourage all of our members to make themselves be heard, by voting. Before you make a choice though, research the candidates and decide which one will be the most labor union friendly. If you'd like to research the candidates, you can start by going to the AFL-CIO web site
. and click on "Issues and Politics", then click on "Congressional Voting Records".
Another pressing political issue was the Bush Administration's proposing of no overtime pay for workers making above 100,000 dollars. Well, it was put into law on August 23rd, under the federal regulatory process. To find out how more about this issue, go to www.AFLCIO.org, and click on "Jobs, Wages, & Economy", then click on "Overtime Pay"
Organizing
On the organizing front, Brother Tom Moore has been working tirelessly to get any non-union elevator workers into Local One. We ask all of our members, that if they know any non-union workers, that they reach out to Brother Moore at 917-567-6040 so that he can help these elevator mechanics be future union members.
15 Broad is still an ongoing non-union site. There is over 100 million dollars of work being built non-union. If this project is completed non-union it will set a very strong tone to builders. It can undermine the union workers standards & work conditions on a very large scale. We need people to volunteer time for picket duty. For information on picketing call the union hall or visit Local 1 web site .
What’s Happened?
We wanted to thank Brother Robert Marciano, Brother John Long & Brother ----- Handibode for their generous donation to the Local One Scholarship fund. We appreciate their generosity and support of Local One.
Sadly Departed
Our Condolences to the family of retired Brother Robert J. Brady.
