Greetings from the brothers and sisters of Local 1,September is usually the busiest of months. This September was no exception. Brother John Green is still battling to regain his health. Hang in there John, we are pulling for you.
Former Business Agent Walter Burke, his son Brother Danny Burke and the rest of their family would like to extend their deepest thanks to all the brothers and sisters of Local 1 and the IUEC for their support, and condolences. Walter's wife, Claudia passed away suddenly, early this September. We shall draw from the heart of suffering itself the means of inspiration and survival. --Sir Winston Churchill
The September union meeting was held on the 18th of the month. President and Business Manager (pro-tem), Ray Hernandez presided over his first Union Meeting. There were many questions asked about the future of the organization. Assisted by Secretary Treasurer (pro-tem), Tony Carudo, Brother Hernandez seemed to handle all questions in a professional fashion. Questions concerning the health benefits were asked. Ray has assured us that International President Dana Brigham and International Secretary Treasurer Kevin Stringer will attend our meeting as soon as their calendar allows them. So, hold on brothers and sisters. Save those questions until they attend our meeting. I am sure they can ease all our minds concerning our health care and other issues.
The following nominations were made at the meeting. President/Business Manager; Joe Nolan, nominated by his son Joe Nolan Jr. and Ray Hernandez nominated by his brother Ed Hernandez. Secretary Treasurer; Mike Duffy and Anthony Carudo Correspondent to the Journal; Tom Vasak and Bill Bennet. By the time this edition of the Constructor hits the street, this election will be completed. Good Luck to all the brothers running. May the best men represent this great union. Please keep in mind, we are custodians in our positions. One does not own their elected position. One merely has the honor of occupying the position contingent upon their proficiency of the task at hand. Dedication and commitment to protect the interests of our membership, and courage to lead us by example is a tall order, but these qualities are ingredients that we can not do without. Most importantly, do not forget how to use your tools. Your tools brought you this far. When confronted with a difficult decision, pick up your tools and reflect. Reflect to the time when these tools were what supported your family. For three thousand of us, they still do. If you can not remember yourself as apprentice then a mechanic, it is time to think about another line of work. To those who may think the election did not go their way, remember, this organization needs you, your input and your support. Three men did not create this union and three men will not be able to sustain its' future. It takes all of us. " Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan, 'Press on,' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race --Calvin Coolidge
September 12th, I like many brothers attended the retirement party of Brian ('tis himself) McHugh and George Hayes. These two gentlemen put quite a few years into Local One and many members are better for the experience. George Hayes has been a role model for new helpers in this business. George taught countless people the ins and outs of the industry. Passing along his knowledge and wisdom (not to mention the odd ticket to Red Sox vs. Yankees game) to those who would listen to him. Brian McHugh has been like a father to me. He introduced Debbie, my wife to me. Brian has been a respected adjuster with many companies. If one were asked what impact Brian had on them, it would be the commitment to sticking with a problem until the elevator ran perfectly (no matter how much overtime hours were required). One need only keep his glasses on his head to ensure a job well done. Another brother who is about to enjoy that great Local 1 Pension and Annuity is John McGuire. He was the guest of honor September 26th, at the Fisherman's Catch where many brothers celebrated his career. Bosses and brothers alike attended to wish him well. Good Luck brothers. Squeeze every ounce of enjoyment out of life, you deserve it.
Monday, September 29th, the Local 1 Golf Outing was held at Cold Spring Country Club. Active members, retirees, friends and relatives all enjoyed the cool breezes and sunny day. The greens and fairways were picturesque. As one brother quoted someone else so eloquently, " A bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at work." Joe Nolan and Walter Burke along with their fellow committeemen really out did themselves with their hospitality. Thanks
