Valued members of the Local One family,
Well, the union meetings have begun. They are taking place at 227, west 24th street in Manhattan, which seems to be centrally located for everybody to attend. With contract talks right around the corner, there will be quite a few issues that need discussing. Also, the companies like to use our attendance at these meetings as a gauge of union strength going into negotiations.
Safety
With the holidays right around the corner, it's important that we all stay safe on our jobsites. As far as safety goes it seems that on the larger jobs/bigger shops that there is a higher awarness to safe working conditions but on the outlying areas and smaller shops saftey seems to be falling by the waste side.
We must remind you that safety is not just the companies responsibility it is also your responsibility. Last week, I was sorry to hear about an unfortunate accident in which a non-union elevator worker borrowed a ladder to climb through an escape hatch. The ladder was aluminum, and after accidentally laying it on top of some exposed wiring, he began to climb it, and was electrocuted, dying instantaneously. Unfortunately for him, he had no safety program to follow, but we do, and we have our union to make sure it's put in place. If you feel that you are not being given the proper safety equipment, that you are being pushed to work in unsafe conditions, or even if you just feel that a small issue is jeopardizing your, or the riding public's safety, call your business agent. The conversation will be kept confidential, and that your problems will be addressed. Regardless, business agents, and the safety committee are making it a priority to stop by jobs and make sure that all of your safety needs are addressed.
Condolences
On a sadder note, The Robinson family is two generations of elevator constructors. Retired Bernie Robinson Sr. gave 42 years in this business. He and his wife Patricia raised 4 children. All three of the boys became elevator constructors. On April 13, 2004 Bernie Sr. & Patricia had to endure the worst pain a parent could have, their son Bernie Jr. was murdered. One of Bernie Jr’s brothers is now in the process of going through the bureaucratic red tape of the court systems to gain full custody of Brianna, 3 year old daughter of Bernie Jr. Our condolences go out to the Robinsons, and we wish them luck on the rough road they have ahead of them.
Hopes and Prayers
All of us at Local One would like to send our best wishes, hopes, and our prayers to Rich Grogan & his wife Gina, as their 13 year old son Christopher tries to recuperate from a recent accident.
Thank You
Brother Fred McCourt won the 50/50 raffle at the local one golf outing. He in turn graciously donated the new golf clubs to the bagpipe band to be raffled off. Thank you Brother McCourt for your generosity.
We also wanted to thank Brother Rogelio Sepulveda for his generous donation to the Local One Scholarship Program.
